Bartu Doruk Internship experience

I had the pleasure and opportunity of spending the spring of 2025 at the Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence Center of Exellence in Vyskov, Czechia. During my time at the Centre of Excellence, my research focused on CBRN Defence in the Arctic, specifically examining preparedness and the operational challenges unique to this environment. I also had the chance to participate in the Consequence Management After a CBRN Incident course, which brought together participants from defence, civilian emergency services, and medical sectors. This interdisciplinary experience offered valuable insights into CBRN response across prevention, protection, and recovery and helped me consider how Arctic conditions require distinct approaches to response planning and capability development compared to temperate environments.

Coming from a technical background in the life sciences, this was a rewarding opportunity to see how scientific knowledge translates into real-world applications within policy and operational frameworks. I greatly valued the chance to immerse myself in a new culture, exploring the hidden gems that Czechia had to offer and, of course, enjoying the many culinary delights of the region. Participating in various events, such as the marching event, was a great way to bond with colleagues while exploring the Czech countryside. Working in such an international environment made me feel at home and reinforced how essential cross-cultural collaboration is in addressing global challenges. It also helped me reflect on the professional environments where I thrive and aspire to contribute in the future.

My time at the JCBRN was defined by the kindness, openness, and professionalism of everyone. The welcoming atmosphere made it easy to learn, especially with the support of my supervisor, Tomáš, who guided me throughout my stay and encouraged both my research and professional growth. I am sincerely grateful to all who made my experience so memorable and impactful throughout this experience.
