The Defence against Terrorism Centre of Excellence (DAT COE) arranged an informative workshop, which was held in Ankara, Turkey from 14th to 15th January 2010.  The main aim of this workshop was to make participants familiar with what Nuclear and Radiological Terrorism is, what the basic strategies to manage the related topics are and to describe the different dimensions of such threats.

There were many speakers at the workshop, from different bodies: Bilkent (TUR), Harvard and Boston (USA) and Quaid-I-Azam (PAK) universities, King’s College London, The Defence Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), other agencies and NATO HQ Brussels. One of keynote speakers, Mr. Guy Roberts (Deputy Assistant Secretary General for WMD Policy) emphasized JCBRN Defence COE’s role in counterterrorism activities within the alliance. This contribution to the entire NATO effort was then described in detail by LTC Martin Peša, who gave a briefing on “JCBRN Defence COE’s Perspective on Preventing Nuclear/Radiological Terrorism”.

All participants appreciated the productivity of the workshop and many of them expressed a desire to attend similar events in the future.  Therefore, we will hopefully see them from 12th to 14th October 2010, when the “CBRN Aspects in Defence against Terrorism” conference is scheduled in Brno.
